FAQ

What's the quickest way to cover a camera in the rain?

For fast cover between takes, polybags and biodegradable shower caps are a common choice. Polybags can be thrown over a camera build in seconds, while shower caps are used for quick protection on eyepieces, monitors, and other small openings. For prolonged rain work, a proper camera cover or Harrison standby cover provides more reliable protection.

What's the difference between a camera cover and a standby cover?

A camera cover like the Panavision Camera Cover is a fitted, branded cover designed to protect a full camera build. A standby cover such as the Harrison Standby Cover is a larger, padded cover that drapes over the entire camera setup during breaks in shooting. Standby covers are typically used when the camera stays on the tripod or dolly between setups.

What are reversible mag covers for?

Reversible mag covers are padded, insulated covers designed to protect film magazines during loading, transport and storage. We stock them in 400-foot and 1000-foot sizes. The reversible design means one side is reflective (to deflect heat) and the other is dark (to absorb it), so you can use whichever side suits the conditions.

Do you sell clear covers that don't block sunlight?

Yes. The glass clear tarpaulins are transparent and available in two sizes — they're useful when you need weather cover over equipment or a setup without blocking light or visibility. We also stock clear cover on a roll which can be cut to whatever length you need.

Camera Covers and Standby Covers

For protecting a camera build during rain, transport or breaks in shooting, we carry several levels of coverage depending on how long the camera needs to stay covered and how much protection is required.

Camera & Standby Covers

Panavision | Harrison | Cap-It

Fitted camera covers, Steadicam covers, padded standby covers and dark cloths for full rain work and between-setup protection.

Quick Covers & Polybags

Polybags | Shower Caps | Set Shield

Fast, single-use or reusable covers for lenses, monitors, eyepieces and full camera builds when rain starts between takes.

Ground & Surface Protection

Groundsheets | Tarpaulins | Neoprene

Ripstop groundsheets, glass clear tarpaulins and neoprene sheets for protecting equipment from wet ground and surfaces on location.

The Panavision Camera Cover is a fitted, branded cover available in blue and red. It's designed to cover a full camera build and is a standard part of most Panavision camera packages. The Panavision Steadicam Cover serves the same purpose for Steadicam rigs.

For longer standby periods, the Harrison Standby Cover - Large is a padded cover that protects the entire camera setup including head, lens and accessories. Harrison also produce the Dark Cloth, which is primarily used for shading monitors and viewfinders in bright conditions but also works as a lightweight cover.

The Cap-It Covers are a reusable, fitted option in two sizes - AKS and Medium - sold in packs of three. They use an elasticated edge to stay in place and are designed to be washed and reused between jobs.

Polybags, Shower Caps and Quick Covers

The fastest weather protection on any set. These are the items camera assistants and grips reach for first when rain starts.

Polybags come in two sizes: 2x2' (61x61cm) and 4x4' (122x122cm). The small size works for individual lenses, monitors and accessories. The large size covers a full camera build for short periods. They're single-use and inexpensive enough to keep a supply on hand throughout a shoot.

Biodegradable shower caps are used for eyepieces, lens ports, monitor connectors and any small opening that needs a quick seal against rain or dust. At 30p each, they're one of the cheapest and most practical items on this page.

Set Shield elasticated equipment covers come in small and large sizes. They stretch over equipment and hold in place with an elastic edge - a reusable step up from polybags when you need a cover that stays put without taping.

Groundsheets, Tarpaulins and Surface Protection

When you're working on wet ground, grass, mud or any surface where equipment can't sit directly, groundsheets and tarpaulins provide a clean, dry working area.

Ripstop groundsheets are available in two sizes: 2.4x1.8m (8x6') and 3.6x2.4m (12x8'). The ripstop material is tear-resistant and lightweight, making them easy to fold and carry in a kit bag. They're commonly used under camera positions, at the base of tripods, or to create a dry area for laying out equipment during prep on location.

Glass clear tarpaulins are transparent, which makes them useful when you need overhead weather cover without blocking light - for example, protecting a camera setup on a dolly track while still allowing the gaffer to light through the cover.

Moisture Protection and Practical Essentials

Not everything in this collection is a cover. Several items here deal with moisture control, padding and practical protection that gets used daily on set.

Silica gel sachets (25g) absorb moisture inside cases, bags and sealed containers. They're commonly placed inside Peli cases, lens cases and storage boxes - particularly when equipment is being stored between jobs or shipped to humid locations.

Neoprene sheets (30x100cm, available in red and blue) are used for padding, wrapping and protecting equipment surfaces. On set, they're often cut to size and placed between equipment to prevent scratching and provide cushioning during transport.

Zip lock bags come in multiple sizes and are used for organising small components, protecting items from moisture, and keeping consumables separated inside larger boxes and bags.

Cling film is used on set for wrapping equipment, sealing containers and providing a quick temporary barrier against dust, moisture and paint. It's also used by grips to protect surfaces during rigging.

Space / emergency blankets (available in orange or green) have a reflective surface that can be used as a quick camera cover in unexpected weather, or to reflect or block heat and light on set.

Bag and Cart Protection

Several products in this range are designed to protect bags, backpacks and Magliner carts specifically.

The Panavision Rain Cover for AC Bag - Small fits over a small AC bag to keep its contents dry during rain. It's a fitted cover designed to work with the Panavision AC bag range.

The Waterproof Backpack Cover (21-35L) fits over most standard-sized backpacks and is useful for camera assistants and crew who carry personal kit to and from set.

The BBQ Cover for Senior Magliner is a fitted cover that protects the top shelf of a senior Magliner cart. It keeps the working surface and any equipment on the top shelf dry during exterior shoots.

The Panavision Handheld Umbrella is a Panavision-branded umbrella for personal use on set.

Reversible Mag Covers

Reversible mag covers are padded, insulated covers designed to protect film magazines during loading, transport and storage. We stock them in 400-foot and 1000-foot sizes. The reversible design means one side is reflective (to deflect heat) and the other is dark (to absorb it), so you can use whichever side suits the conditions.

Common Uses on Set

Weather protection is needed across every department on a production. Here are some of the most common scenarios:

  • Between takes - Polybags and shower caps thrown over cameras, lenses and monitors the moment the AD calls cut on a rainy exterior
  • Standby and lunch breaks - Harrison standby covers or Panavision camera covers draped over full camera builds left on the tripod or dolly
  • Wet ground - Ripstop groundsheets under tripods, camera positions and equipment laydown areas on muddy or damp locations
  • Overhead cover - Glass clear tarpaulins rigged above camera setups where rain cover is needed without blocking light
  • Transport and storage - Silica gel inside Peli cases, zip lock bags for small components, neoprene sheets between equipment to prevent scratching
  • Cart protection - BBQ covers on Magliners, rain covers on AC bags, backpack covers for crew carrying personal kit
